Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
Tipping customs differ by country and by place. Check your bill first, since some restaurants already add a service charge.
How is the split calculated?
The total bill including the tip is divided equally by the number of people.
How the Tip Calculator works
Tip amount = (bill × tip %) ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip, and the amount per person = total ÷ number of people. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people, and the tool does all three steps at once.
The results are shown with a ₹ symbol, but the formula works with any currency.
Worked examples
A restaurant bill of ₹2,400 with a 10% tip, shared by 4 friends. Tip = ₹240.00, total = ₹2,640.00, and each person pays ₹660.00.
For a ₹850 bill with a 15% tip and 2 people, the tip is ₹127.50, the total is ₹977.50, and each person pays ₹488.75.
Tips and common mistakes
- Check the bill first. If a service charge has already been added, you may not want to add a tip on top.
- Tipping customs differ by country. In some places 15 to 20% is standard, in others a small round-off is enough, and in some a tip is not expected.
- Calculate the tip on the pre-tax amount if you prefer, by entering the food total before taxes.
- Use 0% as the tip to simply split a bill evenly.
More questions about the Tip Calculator
How much should I tip?
It depends on the country and the type of service. Many guides suggest 10% in India for good service in a sit-down restaurant and 15 to 20% in the United States, but it is always a personal choice.
Should I tip on the total with tax?
Either approach is acceptable. Some people tip on the pre-tax amount, while others tip on the final bill.
Can I split the bill unevenly?
This tool splits equally. For uneven splits, calculate each person's share of the bill first and run the tip calculation separately.
Does it round the amount?
The results are shown to two decimal places. You can round up or down yourself when paying.
