Calculate profit, loss and percentage
The Profit & Loss Calculator compares your cost price with your selling price and tells you whether you made a profit or a loss, along with the amount and the percentage. Shopkeepers, resellers and students can use it to check margins and set selling prices.
Profit % = (selling price − cost price) ÷ cost price × 100.
Profit percentage is based on the cost price. Margin is often based on the selling price, so the two numbers differ for the same sale.
If the selling price is higher than the cost price, you have a profit. If it is lower, you have a loss. This calculator takes the cost price and selling price and returns the profit or loss amount along with the percentage.
The percentage is calculated on the cost price: Profit % = (Selling price − Cost price) ÷ Cost price × 100. This is the standard convention used in school maths and in many trade calculations.
Business owners often talk about margin as well. Margin is calculated on the selling price instead: Margin % = Profit ÷ Selling price × 100. The two numbers are different for the same sale, so be clear about which one you mean.
Profit: Cost price ₹800, selling price ₹1,000. Profit = ₹200 and profit % = 200 ÷ 800 × 100 = 25%. The margin on the selling price would be 200 ÷ 1,000 = 20%.
Loss: Cost price ₹1,500, selling price ₹1,275. Loss = ₹225 and loss % = 225 ÷ 1,500 × 100 = 15%.
Markup is profit as a percentage of cost. Margin is profit as a percentage of selling price. A 25% markup equals a 20% margin.
Selling price = Cost price × (1 + desired profit % ÷ 100). A 30% profit on ₹500 means a selling price of ₹650.
There is neither profit nor loss. The calculator shows this as no profit and no loss.
